Events

 

There are plenty of events to keep you busy while visiting the Finger Lakes Scenic Wonders.  The area offers unique special events and festivals to work into your visit.

 

Letchworth:

 

MARCH 23 & 24, 30 & 31–  Letchworth State Park Maple Weekends. Continual demonstrations of three different maple sugaring techniques, hourly walks led by park naturalists including how to identify a maple tree, how to tap a tree and more! 

 

APRIL 26 – ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION: Meet at the Humphrey Nature Center at 10:00am. The day begins with a tree program followed by a tree planting and tree walk.

 

MAY 4 – I LOVE MY PARKS DAY: Volunteer to help clean your park. Work alongside Park Staff cleaning the park and trails. Leaf & litter pick up, removal of invasive species, etc. Enjoy lunch with the “Friends of Letchworth”.

 

MAY 17-19 – FIRE ON THE GENESEE: Civil War encampment, living history and battle re-enactments featuring Union, Confederate, and Civilian participants. Camps open at 9:30am to 4:30pm, battles begin at 1:30pm, Highbanks Recreation Area.

 

MAY 22 – WILLIAM PRYOR LETCHWORTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION: School groups are encouraged to attend this event. The general public is also welcome. An outdoor celebration with 10 stations to visit, each station will have a different topic of discussion. Topics include flora and fauna, flint-knapping, Civil War camp life, Mary Jemison, and listen & watch a portrayal of Mr. Letchworth and Caroline Bishop. Cake will be available. MAY 24-27 – RED, WHITE AND BLUE BALLOON RALLY: 6 massed balloon flights, Friday 6:30pm, Saturday and Sunday 6:00am and 6:30pm, Monday 6:00am, launching from Archery Field near the Castile entrance, weather permitting. www.balloonsoverletchworth.com

 

MAY 25 – FREE LEARN TO CATCH A FISH AND KID’S CONSERVATION DAY: Featuring games, activities, educational workshops, free fishing (no license required), free lunch, and door prizes. Presented in conjunction with the NYSDEC. 11:00am to 4:00pm, Trailside Lodge.

 

JUNE 8 - NYS Yoga Festival: A truly inspirational day full of yoga instruction by various teachers in several locations throughout the park culminating with one huge yoga class at Archery Field overlooking the gorge. Food and holistic products vendors. 10 am to 6 pm. In collaboration with HIKYOGA.  www.nysyogafestival.com

 

JULY 10–AUGUST 28 – “LEARN ABOUT LETCHWORTH” LECTURE SERIES: Lecture programs highlighting the history and environmental heritage of Letchworth and the Genesee Valley area. Wednesday evenings, 7:00pm to 8:30pm, Humphrey Nature Center.

 

JUNE 15 &16 – GENESEE VALLEY FARE AND WARE Local Food, Drink and Art: Food and beverage tastings and sales from local vendors who offer products made in NY state. Over 100 vendors, 10:00am to 5:00pm, Highbanks Recreation Area.

 

JULY 20 – TEDDY BEAR FAMILY PICNIC: Featuring a teddy bear parade, story time, crafts, games, and giveaways for children. Bring your favorite teddy bear/stuffed animal and your favorite picnic lunch. 10:00am to 1:00pm, Trailside Lodge.

 

JULY 27 -  BUFFALO PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA CONCERT: The BPO will perform classical & pop favorites at 8pm culminating with fireworks over the gorge at 9:30pm.  Bring blankets/chairs and enjoy this incredible evening.  Daytime activities include food/beverage vendors, artists, and performances by Shake On The Lake.

 

AUGUST 3 – CCC RECOGNITION DAY: Join interpretive hikes to various Civilian Conservation Corps sites within Letchworth and learn of the CCC’s contribution to the development of the park. 10:00am to 4:00pm, Octagon Shelter (Lower Falls Area).

 

AUGUST 23-25 – STONE TOOL TECHNOLOGY SHOW: Flint-knapping, stone tool making demonstrations, Native American crafts, 19th Century Mountain Men encampment, Atl-Atl competition. 10:00am to 6:00pm, Highbanks Recreation Area.

 

SEPTEMBER 1 – SUMMER FAREWELL FESTIVAL: Music at its best with live bands, family activities, food, and a great fireworks show. 3:00pm to 9:30pm, Highbanks Recreation Area.

 

SEPTEMBER 8 – GLEN IRIS 5K RUN: Run benefiting the Cordelia A. Greene Library in Castile, NY. Prizes and food for participants. Visit www.glenirisinn.com or call 585-493-2622 for details.

 

SEPTEMBER 21– NATIVE AMERICAN & PIONEER HERITAGE DAYS: Watch Native American dancers perform traditional dances and learn about their cultural significance. The day’s events will include craft demonstrations as well as a variety of demonstrations related to Native American and pioneer life. 10:00am to 4:00pm, Trailside Lodge Area.

 

OCTOBER 12, 13, & 14 - LETCHWORTH ARTS AND CRAFTS SHOW AND SALE: Over 300 arts and crafts exhibitors, food vendors, and live entertainment. 10:00am to 5:00pm, Highbanks Recreation Area.
